Our Story

Solidarity for Her Education and Empowerment Organization (SHEEO) is a girl-centered, non-partisan, non-profit, and non-governmental organization dedicated to empowering rural adolescent girls in Tanzania to overcome barriers, realize their potential, and build dignified and independent futures. As a community-rooted and girl-centered organization, SHEEO amplifies the voices of marginalized and underrepresented adolescent girls and works to ensure they have access to education, skills, opportunities, and supportive environments that enable them to thrive. Through a holistic and inclusive Girls’ Education and Empowerment approach, SHEEO supports girls to build confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and the capacity to transform their lives and communities.

SHEEO was founded by five young people from rural and low-income backgrounds who personally experienced social and economic exclusion during their upbringing. Their lived experiences inspired a shared commitment to addressing the real barriers faced by rural girls and ensuring that future generations have greater opportunities to succeed. The organization works with both in-school and out-of-school adolescent girls, supporting education continuation, school re-entry, protection, leadership development, skills building, and pathways to economic independence. Originally established on 11 April 2020 as Awakening Horn for Inclusive Rural Development (AHIRD), the organization implemented community development initiatives that revealed the deep and persistent challenges facing rural adolescent girls. This experience informed a strategic shift toward a focused girls’ empowerment model. During the Annual General Meeting held on 13 February 2024, members unanimously resolved to transform the organization into a dedicated Girls’ Education and Empowerment organization under the new name Solidarity for Her Education and Empowerment Organization (SHEEO). This transition reflected both proven impact and a strengthened commitment to advancing girls’ education, rights, and empowerment. SHEEO is registered under Certificate No. 00NGO/R/6939, issued on 7 June 2024 by the Registrar of Non-Governmental Organizations of the United Republic of Tanzania.
