GIRLS’ SITUATION IN TANZANIA

Adolescent girls in rural Tanzania face multiple and interconnected barriers that limit their ability to reach their full potential. Poverty, harmful gender norms, limited access to quality education, inadequate sexual and reproductive health information, and restricted economic opportunities reinforce one another, creating a cycle of vulnerability that persists across generations. Despite progress in expanding access to education, significant inequalities remain. According to UNICEF Tanzania, approximately 3.2 million children and adolescents aged 7-17 are out of school, while the national net secondary school enrollment rate remains low. Rural girls are disproportionately affected, with school dropout often driven by poverty, early pregnancy, child marriage, menstrual health challenges, and lack of safe and supportive learning environments.

Beyond education, the challenges deepen. The Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) 2022 shows that 22 percent of girls aged 15–19 have already begun childbearing, exposing them to health risks, interrupted schooling, and reduced lifetime opportunities. Many girls also lack access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health information and services and continue to face gender-based violence and social norms that limit their voice, participation, and leadership. Economic inequality further compounds these challenges. Many women and girls remain concentrated in vulnerable and low-income livelihoods with limited opportunities for economic advancement. This reduces household resilience, perpetuates poverty, and restricts girls’ pathways to independence and self-reliance. Without targeted interventions, these interconnected challenges continue to undermine girls’ education, well-being, leadership potential, and ability to contribute fully to their communities and the nation’s development.
